Here is an early car wheel. It shares some similarities with modern car wheels, for example it is round and has a rubber tyre. This goes right back to the days when cars were only just a small step on from the cart. We have alloy wheels today which are much smaller and wider.

Note the large gear wheel needed on such a big wheel, a small wheel would require a massively quick and powerful engine, something that just wasn’t possible in those days. The spokes in this wheel were made from wood but carefully hand detailed. If you thought the idea of having a rim painted black and yellow spokes was modern then this should force you to think again! Imagine how comfortable it was riding on solid rubber wheels.
